Realms

Realms are the largest political entities on the continent. A realm is an area of land with laws governing it. While realm borders are not technically defined, they are generally acknowledged to be as marked on the map (due to the lack of a specific definition of borders, ‘border towns’ tend to be places of rapid political change, as multiple realms will constantly try to sway them into becoming official members of the realm, while citizens will be either torn between multiple realms or desirous to stand independent). Realm laws are typically vague and over-arching, while city laws tend to be more specific. They can be easiest described as a large-scale application of the feudal system. Cities and towns agree to abide by the laws set forth by a powerful city, as well as pay some form of tax (whether straight coinage or the provision of some foods and goods varies realm to realm, city to city), and in return the large city agrees to offer service and protection to the smaller.
